First off, let's start with "wow, wasn't the bejing 2008 olympics ceremony spectacular' because it really was. And hats off to those chinese girls who just jumped from side to side for hours while all the athletes walked around in a circle.
Despite how showy it was, I think a better ceremony... one with more statement and impact... to open 2012 with could have no fireworks at all. China must have spent millions(?) on those fireworks. What a very pretty waste of money.
Instead, how about a 2 minute silence noting that the same amount of money was just given to africa or something. THAT would make a statement. Its the type of statement, as leaders of the first world, that we should be making. Reducing world debt. Supporting 3rd world countries. Not blowing loads of money on entertainment.
We can still have music, athletes showing off. But so much could be not spent and given away. collection boxes there alone could collect millions. if it coincided with an advert to donate money over the internet/telephone, so much could be collected.
I think it would make an excellent opening ceremony. anyone disagree?
